Batteries Amateur Radio topic

The Care and Rebuilding of Cordless Power Tool Batteries will be the program at the Oct. 11 meeting of the Highland Amateur Radio Association in Hillsboro. Jon Petersen, the owner of Ross County based Paint Creek Services, will present the program.

Petersen said the average American now owns at least one battery-powered (cordless) power tool or will own one at some time. Although most people think these items are primarily used by contractors, mechanics, emergency responders or farmers, more and more household appliances and electronic gizmos are beginning to be powered by rechargeable batteries of various voltages and sizes. These batteries naturally degrade over time depending on battery chemistry and how well they are charged and maintained.

Peterson will give tips about extending the life of Ni-Cad or Ni-MH batteries used in these tools. He will also explain the battery rebuilding process and how a refurbished battery will not only save money, but often result in a battery that is better than it was when new. He will also comment on the proper method to recycle old cordless batteries.

Highland ARA President Lee Bishop invites anyone interested in learning more about battery refurbishing or rebuilding to attend this free program following the association’s business meeting. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11 in the large basement meeting room in the Highland County Administration Building in Hillsboro.

Bishop also said this is an excellent time for anyone interested in learning more about amateur (ham) radio to meet local hams and learn more about the hobby. He said tickets for the upcoming Nov. 5 radio and electronics flea market in Georgetown will be available.

Refreshments will be served following the meeting and program.
