Meet Santa at the Hillsboro library

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Highland County District Library in Hillsboro, where preparations are well underway for the annual Christmas celebration.

The event is the culmination of Santa’s Reading Workshop – a program in which local children earn golden tickets for reading books.

“They like the challenge,” said Gabrielle Pitzer, the manager of the Hillsboro children’s library. Kids have been working hard to earn tickets for every 10 books they’ve read. After getting five tickets (or reading 50 books), they receive a reward that is perfect for the holiday season. The prize is getting to meet Santa. You can’t beat that.”

The jolly old elf is, of course, the center of the event. However, there are other fun activities planned, including readings of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” and holiday crafts.

“They really enjoy making the crafts,” Pitzer said of previous Christmas programs. This year, kids will make two ornaments (one to take home and one to hang on the library’s Christmas tree), a reindeer, and a Christmas tree.

The event is set for Saturday, Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. It will be held upstairs at the Hillsboro library.
