Ringing in the start of school

The kindergarten students at Greenfield Elementary assembled for the rining of the victory bell Tuesday to mark the beginning of their first school year. All four kindergarten classes had a chance to pull the rope and watch the bell swing back and forth in the tower. It was a great way to celebrate the first week of their formal education. For many years the Victory Bell rang once every morning, calling children from all over the city to come to school. It has been used to celebrate athletic victories, and it rings at graduation time as well. Pictured above are Cathy Rivas, left, and Taitum Lyons. At the end of the 2016-17 school year the fourth grade students will continue this tradition by ringing the victory bell signifying their last day in school as elementary students.
