Hillsboro Board of Ed

The Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education will meet in regular session at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the board office, 39 Willettsville Pike.

Board Local Board of Ed

The Bright Local Board of Education will hold its next regular meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19 at Bright Elementary.

Fairfield Concert Choir

The Fairfield Local High School Concert Choir will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the high school. Admission to the concert will be one non-perishable food item. The food items will be donated to the Leesburg Community Center Food Pantry.

Meal preparation class

The monthly class in meal preparation will be held at the Greenfield Area Christian Center Community Room, 910 N. Fifth St., at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19. Participants will take home their prepared dish along with recipes and the ingredients for another dish. Call 937-981-7176 to reserve your space.

Rocky Fork Community Alliance

The next meeting of the Rocky Fork Community Alliance will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 at the Activity Center near North Beach. The guest speakers will be Highland County Commissioner Shane Wilkin and Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera.

Greenfield hydrant flush Oct. 21

Beginning at 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, the Village of Greenfield will be flushing fire hydrants. Residents will experience discoloration as well as low water pressure at times. It is advised to allow water to run a few minutes or until it clears prior to doing laundry as this discoloration may cause staining, particularly to white clothing. In the event residents experience no water or continuous low water pressure throughout the day on Saturday, Oct. 22, report the issue to the Greenfield Police Department at 937-981-4466.

Lynchburg-Clay Alumni Reunion

The Lynchburg-Clay Alumni Reunion, classes 1980-1990, will held held Saturday, Oct. 22 at the AmVets Campground at Rocky Fork Lake. The campground has been rented and is available for use for $10 for the night. For more information visit the Lynchburg-Clay Alumni Class of 1980-1990 Facebook page.

St Mary’s organ recital

An organ recital by James McLaughlin will be at 3 p.m. Sunday Oct. 23. It is the first of the free 2016-17 Music at St. Mary’s Concert Series sponsored by St. Mary’s Episcopal Church located at the corner of North High and North streets in Hillsboro.

Lynchburg School Board

The Lynchburg-Clay Board of Education will meet in regular session at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24 at the Lynchburg-Clay Board of Education building.

SOESC Records Commission

The Southern Ohio Educational Service Center Governing Board Records Commission will meet at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the Southern Ohio Educational Service Center, 39 Willettsville Pike, Hillsboro, to review records retention and disposal matters.

Humane Society annual meeting

The Highland County Humane Society will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 in the basement of the Highland County Administration Building, 119 Gov. Foraker Place, Hillsboro.

Nazarene Trunk or Treat

The Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene is hosting More Than a Trunk or Treat on Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. You are invited to join in the night of fun and candy. Activities will include trunk or treating, carnival games and refreshments. Businesses, individuals and candidates for elected offices who are interested in setting up a trunk should contact the church office at 937-393-3545.

Senior Center Halloween

The Highland County Senior Citizens Center’s annual indoor trick-or-treat is from 6-8 p.m., along with a haunted house 6-9 p.m., costume contests for children and adults, games and free food is Saturday, Oct. 29. Admission is $1 per person. Various flavors of UDF ice cream will be on sale for $1.50 per scoop. No clown costumes will be permitted. Call 393-4745 for details.

Soup’s On free meal

The Soup’s On free meal will be served Saturday, Oct. 29 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, corner of North High and North streets, Hillsboro. Prayer and praise are at 4:30 p.m. ande dinner is served 5-6 p.m. The menu will feature: chicken BBQ on a bun, mac and cheese, vegetable medley, assorted drinks and desserts. The meal is served eat-in only.

Hillsboro FFA hosting 5K

The Hillsboro FFA Chapter will hold a 5K race on Oct. 29 at Rocky Fork State Park (9800 North Shore Drive). Registration will begin at 8 a.m. and the race will begin at 9 a.m. The fee is $25; however, if you preregister by Oct. 14, the fee is $20 and includes a free T-shirt. To preregister, pick up a form in the main office or ag department at Hillsboro High School. The forms are also available online at hcs-k12.org. All proceeds go toward Adopt-A-Family, helping provide Christmas gifts to local families in need.

Open Door free meal

The Open Door free meal at the Greenfield United Methodist Church will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29. Serving will be from 4 until 4:30 p.m. The menu will be chili, crackers, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and applesauce. Everyone is welcome.

GACC Showcase Open House

The Greenfield Area Christian Center will host a Ministry Showcase Open House from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30. The community is invited to stop by and come see the center and learn about the work the various ministries are doing in the community.

Altrusa Book Sale

Altrusa of Highland County is preparing for the annual Altrusa/AAUW book sale. Barrels for the collection of gently used books have been placed in the Hillsboro, Greenfield, Lynchburg and Leesburg public libraries in addition to Kroger and the Community Markets in Hillsboro and Greenfield. No magazines, encyclopedias, texts or condensed books, please. The book sale will be held at the Giovanni Pizza/Rent 2 Own shopping mall on North High Street in Hillsboro on Friday, Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds will provide local scholarships and literacy projects.

Vets program at senior center

There will be a veterans program and dinner at the Highland County Senior Citizens Center at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4. RSVP to 393-4745. All veteran’s dinner are free and all others are $7. Proceeds will be donated to VFW Post 9094 Veteran’s Relief Fund. The community is encouraged to attend.

Highland County Retired Teachers

The Highland County Retired Teachers Association will hold its November meeting and luncheon at the Highland County Senior Center, 185 Muntz St., Hillsboro, on Monday, Nov. 7. Social hour begins at 11 a.m.; lunch ($8) is served at noon. The program will feature Hope Short, an STRS health care representative. Reservations may be made by calling 937-981-4149 by Saturday, Oct. 29.

Veterans Appreciation Night

The fourth annual Veterans Appreciation Night and Open House, hosted by the Highland County Veterans Service Office, will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11 at the Hi-TEC Center Conference Rooms, 1575 N. High St., Hillsboro. Light refreshments will be served.

Snowflake Pageant

The sixth annual Snowflake Pageant will be held Saturday, Nov. 12 at the Southern State Community College auditorium in Hillsboro for kids 6 months to 18 years old. There is a $25 entry fee and entry forms are available at Appearances Salon, 107 W. Main St., Hillsboro. Sign-up ends Nov. 5. For more information call 937-402-4505.

Children’s Holiday Tea Party

A Children’s Holiday Tea Party will be held by the Highland County Historical Society at its Highland House Museum at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20 for kids ages 6-10. There will be an elegant tea party, entertainment favors for each child, crafts and a gift bag. The cost is $7.50 per child and the deadline for reservations is Monday, Nov. 14.
