A Hillsboro man appeared on a charge of felonious assault in Hillsboro Municipal Court on Thursday following an alleged shooting.

An affidavit filed with the court states that the Hillsboro Police Department responded to a report of a gunshot shortly after 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

Upon arrival at an apartment on North East Street, the officer found two females standing over a male “who had what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his upper chest/neck area,” according to the affidavit.

A second male – identified as Roger M. Hatfield, 62, Hillsboro – was reportedly sitting across the table from the others. The officer also reported that there was “a black pistol sitting directly in front of Hatfield on the table and a spent shell casing on the floor behind him,” as stated in the affidavit.

The affidavit adds that the pistol was secured and found to be chambered with a total of five rounds.

The life squad arrived and provided treatment to the alleged victim who, according to the affidavit, “was not responsive to (the others’) presence.” He was transported to Highland District Hospital and then care-flighted to Miami Valley.

The affidavit states that the officer spoke with Hatfield, who reportedly said that the alleged victim had called both a relative and himself names. Hatfield allegedly said that “he did not mean to shoot (him) in the chest and was trying to hit him in the arm,” the affidavit states.

Hatfield reportedly added that “he was not trying to hurt (the alleged victim),” the affidavit states.

After Hatfield was placed into a patrol vehicle, he gave officers permission to look around the residence, the officer reported.

The two females who were on the scene reportedly “stated they were present but did not see anything,” according to the affidavit.

Also reportedly located at the scene was a 9 mm bullet, which was “found to have struck the television directly behind (the alleged victim), exit(ed) the television, (struck) the wall, and bounce(d) onto the floor,” the affidavit states.

Hatfield was transported to the Highland County Justice Center where, according to the affidavit, he gave permission to collect samples for a gunshot residue test. He allegedly said that “he used his right hand and (officers) wouldn’t find anything on his left,” the affidavit states.

Those samples and the other evidence collected will all be sent to a crime lab, the officer reported.

The affidavit added that while he was at the Justice Center, Hatfield reportedly “again … stated he was sorry and was not trying to kill (the alleged victim) but just hit his arm.”

The officer also reported that at the time of the affidavit, the alleged victim’s condition was unknown.

Hatfield is charged with second-degree felony felonious assault. He appeared on that charge in the municipal court on Thursday.

After Hillsboro Municipal Court Judge David H. McKenna described the charge and possible penalties, Hatfield said, “I don’t really understand what’s going on here other than what you just told me.”

The judge asked, “You do understand that you’ve been charged with assault for shooting somebody?” He also asked Hatfield if he understood that the charge could carry up to eight years in prison.

Hatfield then said that he understood. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for next Thursday.

McKenna said “because of the serious nature of this charge,” Hatfield will be held on a $20,000 bond. The judge added, “We don’t know (the alleged victim’s) condition at this time.”

If Hatfield posts that bond, he will be on reporting probation. He is to have no contact with the alleged victim or the two females who were reportedly present. He was also ordered to enroll in substance abuse counseling, records add.
