HCCAO offers 90-second shopping spree

It was so successful a couple years ago that the chance to win a 90-second shopping spree is being offered again as a fundraiser for the Highland County Community Action Organization, Inc.

Community Markets in Greenfield is partnering with Community Action on the project that will give the winner 90 seconds to run through the store and put two items of most products in their cart. Examples of some of the products purchased in the past have been hamburger, steak, turkey, ham, milk, ice cream, toilet paper, eggs, diapers and bulk products.

Alcohol, tobacco products, and gift cards are excluded.

The last shopping spree winner received groceries retailing for $1,000, according to HCCAO Executive Director Julie Wise.

“The last time we did it in 2014 we sold all the tickets and the person that won was from Greenfield,” said Ruth Cutright, HCCAO executive assistance. “You can pick someone else to run and get the groceries for you. That’s how the last person got so much.”

The proceeds will go back to Community Action to help support individuals the organization serves in Highland County.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at the Senior Nutrition Site located at 1230 Greenhills Drive in Greenfield, or at HCCAO’s main office at 1487 N. High St., Suite 500, Hillsboro. Tickets are $5 each or six for $25. The drawing will be held Thursday, Dec. 15.

Wise said the date and time for the shopping spree will be worked out with the winner. She said it usually takes place in the morning when the store is less crowded. She also said the winner will have time to walk through the store before the shopping spree to see where everything is located.

“Most people start right at the meat and work their way up because the meat is probably the most expensive thing they can grab,” Wise said.

She said the shopper can use more than one shopping cart, and that as the time ticks down, how much time is left will be announced over the speaker system as various intervals.

“Our agency provides services in a wide variety of areas to help the residents of Highland County. Some programs are offered only specific times of the year and others come and go,” Wise said. “During these difficult economic times, many people may have to turn to our organization for assistance for the very first time. In 2015, we helped over 4,000 families in Highland County.”
