A man allegedly wielding a knife is in custody of the sheriff’s office after reportedly breaking into an occupied Rocky Fork Lake area home earlier this week.

Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera has reported that on Wednesday at 5:22 a.m., the Highland County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a residence on Juniper Trail that a male subject brandishing a knife had kicked the front door of the residence open and had entered the home.

According to the sheriff, the subject and homeowner got into an altercation and the knife was taken from the male that had broke into the home. The male was escorted out of the residence, but then went to the back door of the home, kicked the back door in, and gained entry into the home again. The male suspect picked up a knife from inside the home and got into another altercation with the homeowner.

When deputies arrived at the scene, the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Richard Hillard, was standing in the doorway of the home and was taken into custody without incident.

Barrera said Thursday that it was his understanding that the occupants of the home did not know Hilliard.

Hillard was charged with aggravated burglary and felonious assault, first- and second-degree felonies, respectively.

The county jail site showed that Hilliard was being held on a $50,000 bond on each of the charges.
