Highland County sheriff’s deputies on Saturday apprehended a man brandishing a knife and a sharpened stick as he was allegedly in the process of committing a burglary at a residence in Dodson Township, according to a press release from the office of Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera.

Barrera said in the press release that his office received a call at approximately 4:46 a.m. Saturday from a resident on Abernathy Road in Dodson Township of a burglary in progress.

According to the press release, the caller advised being awakened to someone knocking at the door. Shortly after the knock on the door, the caller heard the side door to the home being kicked in.

The homeowner called 911, and deputies were dispatched to the home. While deputies were on their way to the scene, they were advised that the subject had entered the home.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they met the male subject walking from the home toward the road. The subject was brandishing a knife and a sharpened stick, according to the sheriff. The deputies ordered the male subject to put the weapons on the ground. The subject was taken into custody without incident, according to the press release.

The male subject was identified as Douglas K. Cooper, 20, Lynchburg. He was taken into custody and taken to the Highland County Justice Center, where he was charged with Aggravated Burglary, a first-degree felony. Barrera said the case remains under investigation.

Barrera said Monday that Cooper posted bond and was released over the weekend.

Cooper appeared in Hillsboro Municipal Court on Monday for an arraignment. He was also charged with hit-skip, open container and under-age possession of alcohol violations. Barrera said Monday that Cooper’s car was found in a ditch not far from the residence where he was arrested.

A preliminary hearing was set for 9:30 a.m. March 16. He was ordered to have no contact with the residents of the house where he was arrested, and was placed on curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
