Family Farm Fun

Organizers said about 40 people turned out Friday evening for the Family Farm Fun Night at the Park sponsored by the city of Hillsboro and Highland County Farm Bureau and held at Liberty Park.

“We were very pleased,” said David Bushelman a local Farm Bureau trustee who helped organize the event. “There were about 40 people, other than those helping, we guestimated. We were up against the first home football game of the year and that might have hurt us, but overall we were pleased. We had some very good comments after the fact.”

It was the fourth in a series of Movies Under the Stars the city scheduled for this year, but just the second one that was actually held due to weather.

“We think it’s a great concept. We just need the weather to cooperate,” Bushelman said, in a comment echoed by mayor Drew Hastings, who was on hand Friday.

The evening started around 7 p.m. with a petting zoo, games and farm equipment displays. There was cornhole, hillbilly golf, and “Minute to Win It” games operated by the Lynchburg-Clay FFA. Farm Bureau’s grain bin rescue trailer was on display along with a tractor provided by Five Points Implement. Nationwide Insurance provided free ice cream sandwiches, popcorn and water, and Cowaburger was selling food.

At dusk, the film “Farmland” was shown, which takes an intimate look at the lives of several farmers and ranchers, all in their 20s, and all responsible for running their own agriculture businesses.

Then there were interactive discussions by a five-person panel of local farmers.

Friday’s special farm-themed activities were sponsored by Highland County Farm Bureau, city of Hillsboro, Nationwide Insurance (Newman Insurance Agency and Judy Wilson-Parks Insurance), Five Points Implement Company Inc., Tim Sheeley and Family, Lynchburg-Clay FFA, Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District and Buckeye Country 105.5.

The movie series is sponsored by Preferred Midwest Title and Susan L. Davis, attorney, First State Bank, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Star Cinemas.
