Cookies With Characters

Seventeen life-size characters, lunch, games and more will be part of a new event called Cookies With Characters set for Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Highland County Senior Citizens Center in Hillsboro.

“If you like Disney princesses, Superhero characters and other popular characters you are going to love this event,” said Mechell Frost, executive director of the senior center.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $5 for anyone 2 or older and $3 for those 23 months and younger.

The costumed characters, actually National Honor Society and 4-H members from Hillsboro, Fairfield and Whiteoak high schools, will interact with the crowd throughout the event.

There are separate lunch menus for the kids and adults. The kids’ menu includes chicken nuggets, French fries, fruit and a drink. The adult menu includes pulled pork, cole slaw, chips and a drink.

Everyone paying admission to the event will receive a door prize ticket. The kids’ prizes include things like coloring books and the adult prizes are household items.

Kids, are others if they like, will have chances to sing along with the characters, there will be games, everyone gets to decorate a cookie that can eat or take home, and all the kids get to choose between a glitter or superhero cape decorating activity.

There will also be three raffles – one for superhero items, one for princess items, and one for a Vera Bradley cloth purse. Tickets are one for $1 or six for $5.

A photographer from Timeless Treasures will be at the center to take family portraits. For $15, each family will receive three 4-inch by 6-inch photos, two 5-inch by 7-inch photos and one 8-inch by 1o-inch photo. That option will available only from 10 a.m. to noon. All proceeds will benefit the senior center.

Support Our Troops of Highland County will also be at the event and kids will be able to color pictures that will be sent to military personnel.

Frost said the event serves several purposes, including introducing community members who may not otherwise be there to the center.

“We want everyone in the community to know about the senior center,” Frost said of the reasons for the new event. “We have a lot of fun putting these things on, they also serve as fundraisers for the center, and we were looking for a creative way to attract the community and let everyone have some fun, too. People like cookies, and they like characters, so we just kind of put them together.”

Tickets are on sale now at the senior center at 185 Muntz St. or they can be purchased at the door, while they last.
