A Hillsboro man was killed Saturday evening in a one-vehicle accident near Greenfield.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Wilmington Post, Dustin R. Willoughby, 29, was operating a white 2008 Nissan Altima westbound on SR 28 in Highland County west of the intersection with Miami Trace Road in Madison Township at 10:41 p.m.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Willoughby failed to negotiate a curve and subsequently traveled off the right side of the road. When the vehicle left the roadway it struck a mailbox, tree stump, and ditch before overturning. The vehicle then rolled over several times before striking a utility pole and ejecting Willoughby, the state patrol said.

Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District personnel responded to the scene where they located Willoughby, who sustained severe injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Highland County coroner, according to the state patrol.

At the time of the crash the roadway was wet and rain had just stopped falling. Speed and lack of using a safety belt appeared to be a factors in the crash. There was no evidence to indicate drugs and alcohol were involved, the state patrol said.

The crash remains under investigation.
