Youngsters in a third-grade class at Greenfield Elementary dove into their new dictionaries on Thursday as they each tried to be the first to locate the word “nocturnal.”

Excited students have received their very own dictionaries from the Greenfield Rotary Club.

The Rotary members handed out dictionaries to third graders at Greenfield Elementary on Thursday, and loaded up their cars for delivery of dictionaries, as well as thesauruses to fifth graders, at Rainsboro and Buckskin elementary schools on Friday.

The annual distribution is part of The Dictionary Project, a non-profit organization whose sponsors have distributed more than 25 million dictionaries in the United States and abroad over the last 20 years, and more than 1 million this school year alone, according to the project’s website.

The Hillsboro Rotary Club, which also participates every year, is preparing for its distribution of dictionaries to third graders across Highland County, likely in the next couple weeks, according to the club president Rick Williams.

Both the Greenfield and Hillsboro Rotary clubs have been involved in The Dictionary Project for more than a decade.

According to the mission statement of The Dictionary Project, the goal “is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary.”

Assisting students goes right along the goal of Rotary clubs around the world, with members adhering to the motto of “service above self” through projects, both locally and globally, that provide education, support communities and schools, combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, promote peace, and eradicate polio.
