The decision to postpone Hillsboro’s Christmas celebration might turn out to be a stroke of genius, if the weather forecast holds up.

The annual parade, Santa’s Workshop and a live nativity scene sponsored by the Hillsboro Uptown Business Association were originally set for Nov. 28. But inclement weather led HUBA President Joe Mahan to postpone the activities until Dec. 12. Saturday’s forecast looks like Mahan made the right call.

The forecast for Saturday calls for rain in the morning, but by noon skies should clear. By 7 p.m., when Hillsboro’s first-ever nighttime, illuminated parade gets under way, the prediction is for temperatures in the low 60s and dry skies, with just a 5 percent chance of precipitation.

The celebration starts with Santa’s Workshop from 4:30-6 p.m., located in the Media Room of The Times-Gazette. St. Nick and his helpers will be on hand to greet youngsters, pose for pictures and spread the jolly old elf’s special blend of holiday cheer.

The parade begins at 7 p.m. from the Highland County Fairgrounds, and is expected to roll through the center of Hillsboro by 7:20 p.m.

Following the parade, a live nativity will be staged in the bay/garage located between the Paint Creek fire station and The Times-Gazette offices along Gov. Trimble Place, across from the Highland County Courthouse.

Mahan said Friday he is optimistic about the weather Saturday.

“It looks like it couldn’t be better,” he said.
