Southern State Community College has appointed Dr. Nicole Roades as vice president of academic affairs.

“Faculty Senate congratulates Dr. Roades and looks forward to working closely with her as we face the challenges and opportunities together to provide accessible, affordable, and high quality education to our communities,” said Dr. Gayle Mackay, SSCC Faculty Senate president.

The vice president of academic affairs is a senior member of the president’s leadership team whose primary responsibility is to ensure the academic integrity of the college.

“I am honored and humbled to accept this position. It is personally rewarding to be afforded the opportunity to advance within an organization that serves such an important role in our community,” said Roades. “My predecessor often said of Southern State that we are in the business of changing family trees. He was right and I deeply value the opportunity to be a part of such important work.”

The VPAA position was most recently held by Dr. Ryan McCall, who in December was named president of Marion Technical College. The resulting search for a new vice president of academic affairs attracted top talent from around the nation.

“The search committee assisted by reviewing applications, selecting finalists, participating in initial interviews, and offering their assessment of the candidates,” said Dr. Kevin Boys, SSCC president. “In the end, two candidates advanced for further extensive conversation with me. After due consideration, I was convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that the best person was right here in our midst. I have every confidence that Dr. Roades will most capably lead the academic division for years to come.”

An alumna of Southern State Community College, Roades earned a B.A. in Organizational Studies from Northern Kentucky University, M.A. in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix, and Ph.D. in Leadership and Change from Antioch University.

In 1998, she began her career at Southern State and has served in many roles, most recently as vice president of institutional advancement. Among key accomplishments in this role, Roades led the communications team in rebranding the college, successfully raised thousands of dollars for student scholarships and program support, and co-authored the comprehensive assurance argument for reaccreditation resulting in a 10-year reaffirmation of the institution’s regional accreditation.

“Having been a part of the institution most of my professional career, I have the advantages and the challenges of institutional history, but, most importantly, I have a keen understanding and passion for the college’s vision to be Your First-Choice College,” said Roades. “I am eager to leverage my experience, skills, abilities, and leadership to continue in this vision. Further, I am pleased and honored to work alongside an outstanding leader and champion for the college, Dr. Kevin Boys, as well as the many committed, talented, and exceptional faculty and staff members who choose to share their talents here.”

Roades’ appointment was effective March 1, 2016.

“This is an exciting time in our college’s history and I look forward to advancing the work that is already underway while also pursuing new opportunities,” said Roades. “Among other things, I am eager to explore how we can create clearer academic and support pathways for students which might improve persistence and graduation. I am interested in developing a framework for institutional effectiveness that will better inform our decision-making processes and improve student learning outcomes. And, most importantly, I will relentlessly pursue quality initiatives and partnerships that speak to our mission and vision.”

She and her husband, Brad, reside in Hillsboro with their two children, Jack and Katie Jo.
