Two men were arrested in the early morning hours of Saturday after an active meth lab and items used to make methamphetamine were discovered, according to information released by the Highland County Sheriff’s Office.

Ricky Burton, 45, Lebanon, and Christopher Tolle, 27, Peebles, were both arrested and charged with third-degree felony illegal assembly or possession of chemicals for the manufacture of drugs. Each are currently in custody at the Highland County Justice Center, according to the news release.

The discovery came from a deputy investigating a tip from Adams County about possible meth production, an affidavit filed with the Hillsboro Municipal Court on Monday states. Upon investigating the deputy encountered two vehicles, with one parked partially on the roadway, near an abandoned property on Walnut Shade Road in Brushcreek Township around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 5.

The affidavit states that when the deputy exited his vehicle he could hear a generator running, and located a camper with a light on inside. Inside the camper is where the two men were located with Burton, who said he rented the lot, giving permission for the officer to search the premises. Numerous items used in the production of meth were located in the camper and in one of the vehicles, the affidavit says, as well as more items in the abandoned structure, though the latter was obtained by a search warrant.

Records show that both men were arraigned in Hillsboro Municipal Court on Monday. Burton is facing additional charges of fifth-degree felony possession of meth and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $120,000. Tolle’s bond is set at $70,000.

The Brushcreek Fire Department responded to the scene on Saturday, as well as detectives for the site cleanup, the sheriff’s release states.

The matter remains under investigation.

The sheriff’s office release states that those seeking further clarification or information can contact the sheriff’s office at 937-393-1421. To reach Highland County’s Crime Tip hotline call 937-840-6243.
