Drug use prompts removal of infants

Two infants in two separate cases have been put into the temporary custody of Children Services following the admitted use of drugs by their respective mothers.

In one case, an infant was removed by an emergency order of Highland County Juvenile Court Judge Kevin Greer this week.

According to the complaint filed with the court, items used to make methamphetamine were found in the home, and an adult in the home was charged with possession of criminal tools. While the mother is not the adult who is charged with possessing the meth-making items, the complaint said she did admit to doing meth while caring for the baby within days of her interview with authorities.

The matter will come back before the court in the coming days.

In the other case, a mother agreed to temporary custody of her infant being placed with the agency for the next year.

According to the complaint filed with the court, the mother has pending felonies, tested positive for illicit drugs, and admitted to using drugs while she was pregnant. Additionally, she has three previous Children Services cases from another county, with those three children currently in the custody of others.

In another hearing, temporary custody of three children ranging in ages from 12 to infant is also with Children Services after their mother admitted the children’s dependency.

A dependent child is defined by Ohio law as: one who is homeless, destitute or lacking in adequate parental care through no fault of the child’s guardians; a child who lacks the adequate parental care due to the mental or physical condition of the child’s guardians; whose condition or environment is such as to warrant the state, in the interests of the child, in assuming the child’s guardianship.

The case was initiated in March after an adult in the home overdosed when two of the children were present in the residence. Drugs were also found in the home, the complaint said.

In another matter, a 17-year-old admitted to the misdemeanor offense of possessing marijuana. He was ordered to perform eight hours of community service and to undergo an assessment at FRS.
