Children in county custody

Three children previously returned to their mother several months ago under court-ordered protective supervision are now back in the temporary custody of Highland County.

The children, ranging in age from 2 to 8 years old, were initially removed from their home due to the mother’s drug use. Sometime after they were returned to her in September, the children were placed in a safety plan with another relative, but that person was recently found to be using drugs.

The children were removed by an emergency order out of Highland County Juvenile Court this week and once again placed in the temporary custody of Highland County Children Services.

A 15-year-old female, who in February appeared before the court on an assault charge, was back this week for violating her probation. She admitted to underage consumption and was ordered to spend two weeks in detention.

Additionally, the teenager must undergo a substance abuse assessment and will be on community control indefinitely.

A 17-year-old male initially charged with reckless operation has admitted to the lesser offense of failure to maintain reasonable control. He was ordered to complete a traffic class and his license was suspended for 30 days.

In another hearing, a 17-year-old male admitted to disorderly conduct and was ordered to perform eight hours of community service.

After admitting to being truant from school, a 17-year-old female was given a suspended commitment to out-of-home placement and was placed on community control until she turns 18.
