A Peebles woman has been charged after a young child was found in an unattended vehicle Tuesday in Hillsboro.

The Hillsboro Police Department said that it responded to Walmart after receiving a call reporting that a small child had been left alone in a vehicle. Responding officers found a 2-year-old boy sleeping in a vehicle.

After several minutes, the police department said officers located an adult female that was supposed to be caring for the child shopping in the store.

Heather Hanks, 23, of Peebles, was arrested for endangering children and was transported to the Highland County Jail.

Highland County Children Services was contacted and the child was released to his mother.

Hanks appeared Wednesday in Hillsboro Municipal Court on the first-degree misdemeanor charge. She was released on an own recognizance bond on the conditions that she have no contact with Walmart, observe an 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. curfew unless she’s at work, and cooperate with Children Services.

Hanks is scheduled to appear in municipal court for a pretrial hearing in the case at 8 a.m. July 1.
