Yard, bake sale

The Rainsboro Church of Christ, half of mile off U.S. Route 50, will hold a yard and bake sale Friday, Aug. 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 8 starting at 9 a.m.

Family Fun & Movie Night

Leesburg United Methodist Church will present an outdoor Family Fun & Movie Night on Friday, Aug. 7, featuring “Muppets Most Wanted.” Activities will begin at 8 p.m., on the grounds of LUMC, 117 Church Street, Leesburg. Bring your own blankets or lawn chairs. Movie begins at sunset. All minors must be accompanied by a parent/adult for the evening. There will be fun activities, hot dogs, popcorn, sodas, and cookies, as well as a free drawing for a movie package for a family of four at Star Cinemas. The next movie night will be on Friday, Aug. 21, featuring “Paddington.”

Indoor Yard Sale

The Highland County Senior Citizens Center Indoor Yard Sale is Friday, Aug. 7 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Rental space is available now. Tables, chairs and live band entertainment will be provided. Table rental: $10 per table for members $15 for non-members. The community is invited to shop and rent. Breakfast is available for purchase for $4 from 7-9 a.m. Lunch available for purchase from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Call the center for details at 393-4745.

Ice cream social

An ice cream social will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Dodsonville Community Church. There will be games and prizes, food and door prizes. All donations go to Lynchburg-Clay Redi-fest.

Poker Run

The Independent Bikers Association (IBA) West Central Chapter is hosting a Poker Run/Event on Aug. 8. All proceeds will go to the Highland County Senior Citizen Nutrition Program. The event will be held at the IBA Clubhouse on 211 North 11th Street in Greenfield. It will include live music, food, a 50/50 drawing, an auction, bike games, primitive camping, and adult beverages. Sign-ups are 10 a.m., with kickstands up at 12 p.m. Cost is $10 single or $15 for a couple, and $5 a person for non-riders at the after party. All bikers and cars are welcome. Amazing Race

The Amazing Race of Highland County will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 at Liberty Park in Hillsboro. There is still time to register at www.amazingraceofhc.org and event organizers are still accepting sponsors. The race has raised $26,000 for 22 non-profit organizations in Highland County over the past two years. Even if you aren’t running you can join the fun. Hangout at the finish line and listen to the Blue Steel band while enjoying Cow-a-Burger or the Highland County Senior Center and Anna’s Army serving food and beverages. Car show

A Mowrystown car show will be held Saturday, Aug. 15 and visitors can stop by the Grange Hall (East Main Street) for breakfast. The menu will include sausage, pancakes, gravy, biscuits, coffee, milk and juice and will be served from 8-11 a.m. These items will be offered for a donation. All proceeds will benefit the Whiteoak Valley Grange.

Soup’s On free meal

The Soup’s On free meal will be offered Saturday Aug. 29 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, corner of North High and North streets, Hillsboro. Prayer and praise is at 4:30 p.m. Dinner, eat-in only, is served from 5-6 p.m. The menu will be chicken patties served on a bun, vegetable medley, applesauce, assorted drinks, pies, cake and ice cream.

Upcoming dates for St. Mary Catholic School

St. Mary Catholic School and Patch of Heaven Preschool will start classes Wednesday, Aug.19. The 4-year-old students and grades K-5 will start Wednesday and the 3-year-olds start Thursday, Aug. 20. The preschool hours are 8:45-3:15 and the elementary hours are 8:45-3:30. Doors open at 8:30. Before and after care is available to all students.

Open house will be held Monday, Aug. 17 at 6 p.m. in the school hall. Uniform swap days are Aug. 6-7 from 9-3 and Monday, Aug. 10 from 6-7 p.m.

Alzheimer’s/Dementia Lunch & Learn For Families

A free Alzheimer’s/Dementia Lunch & Learn For Families will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 22 and Dec. 15 at The Laurels of Hillsboro. These programs will provide an opportunity for families and caregivers to learn and ask questions about Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, while receiving support from others in similar situations.
