SSCC events address sexual violence, harassment

As part of the Campus SaVE (Sexual Violence Elimination) Act, Southern State Community College will present the documentary “It Was Rape” at all four campuses, followed by a question-and-answer session with counselors. The events are free and open to the public.

“Rape is wrong, illegal and reprehensible – and yet still tragically common,” writes Jennifer Baumgardner, director of the documentary. “In this film, eight women tell their diverse personal stories of sexual assault, from a Midwestern teenager trying alcohol for the first time to a Native American woman gradually coming to terms with her abusive childhood. Gripping and emotional, this film is an opportunity to empathize with people – not just absorb faceless statistics – and to puncture the silence and denial that allow sexual assault to thrive. Ultimately, their stories shed light on how this epidemic affects us all.”

Showings will be held:

• Thursday, Feb. 18, from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Community Room on Fayette Campus, 1270 U.S. Route 62 SW, Washington C.H.;

• Monday, Feb. 22, from 3-5 p.m. in the Community Room on Brown County Campus, 351 Brooks Malott Road, Mt. Orab;

• Tuesday, Feb. 23, from 4-5:30 p.m. in Room 107 on Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro; and

• Thursday, March 3, from 4-5:30 p.m. in Room 303 on North Campus, 1850 Davids Drive, Wilmington.

Enacted in March 2013, the Campus SaVE Act is the most recent and far reaching in a long line of laws that protect students from sexual violence and harassment. It amended the 1990 Clery Act to mandate extensive primary prevention and awareness programs regarding sexual misconduct and related offenses. To learn more, visit www.campussaveact.org.
