Wrestling for Relay

Billing itself as the oldest professional wrestling company in Ohio, the International Wrestling Alliance is bringing its act to Marshall on Friday with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Highland County Relay for Life.

“My husband and I are big wrestling fans and we thought why not bring it back to Highland County,” said Brenda Mackan, the International Wrestling Alliance (IWA) director of public relations. “We’ve seen shows here in Highland County in the past, but it’s been a long time and we want to make Highland County a regular stop because we’ve saw the crowds that used to come.”

The event is being staged at the former Marshall school gymnasium, now known as the Marshall Community Center. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. and wrestling starts at 8 p.m. Mackan said the shows usually last about two hours.

Presale tickets are $8 and can be purchased at Slow and Low Barbecue in Hillsboro and Paint Valley Hardware in Bainbridge. Tickets at the door the night of the show are $10.

“We’re a big part of Relay for Life and it’s dear not only to my husband and I, but our company, too,” Mackan said. “We’re big about charities and fundraisers to help the communities we tour in, especially since this is breast cancer awareness month and to help spread the message about what Relay is about.”

According to Mackan, Friday’s matchups will include an IWA heavyweight championship match between reigning champion Shane Christian and challenger Lennox Norris, The Bronze God. There will also be a tag team championship, a match between Miss Bangkonck and Jessica Jean for the vacant IWA Women’s Championship title, and a match between “wrestling legend” Doink the Clown and Laughing Lunatic Joka Wyld.

“The match between Miss Bangkonck and Jessica Jean is a grudge match for them. They had a match in Columbus and it did not go Miss Bangkonck’s way, so she is looking for revenge,” Mackan said.

She said some of the proceeds will benefit the local Charlie’s Angels Relay for Life team that she has been a member of for several years, and that members of the team will be on hand to speak about cancer.

“But this will be about a good family show and bringing quality wrestling to the area,” Mackan said.

Concessions will be available and Mackan said there will be an intermission where the wrestlers will interact with the fans.

“Join us for a night of wrestling action and cancer awareness as the IWA and Relay for Life give a powerbomb to cancer,” Mackan said.
