Crime, problem properties topics at council

Concerned residents turned out for this week’s Greenfield Village Council meeting to discuss not only problem properties, but also criminal activity in their neighborhoods.

Greenfield Village Administrator Ron Coffey said the residents vented their concerns about recent car break-ins and broken windows and also about starting a neighborhood watch.

While the residents don’t need the permission of council to organize, Coffey said the village administration would assist them if needed in gathering information or materials, or maybe try to put together an informational meeting.

“My hope is that we can put together something for informational purposes that would be useful to everyone,” whether that’s about crime in the village or problem rental properties, Coffey said Friday.

As to the issue of the condition of some rental properties causing problems throughout the village, Coffey said he has contacted other communities in regard to how they are dealing with the problem.

Coffey also referred those at council to the Ohio Municipal League’s website and a section containing the top 10 requested sample ordinances, with some of them relevant to the rental property problems, he said.

At a previous meeting two neighbors of a rental property told council about the problems they regularly face like trash, needles, roaches, and mice due to the rental units abutting their properties.

Coffey said it’s a problem that is not unique to Greenfield, and before the village can proceed in possible ways to combat the issue, more research is needed.

Coming up next week in Greenfield are the annual Halloween Parade sponsored by the Paint Creek Firefighters Association. It will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 27 with lineup beginning at the colonnades on Fifth Street at 5 p.m.

Safe Trick or Treat, sponsored by the Greenfield Area Merchants Association, will be on Thursday, Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m. on South Washington Street near the City Building. In the case of inclement weather, Coffey said previously the event could be moved to the colonnades at the school.

Trick-or-Treat throughout Greenfield and Highland County is also Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m.

The next Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire Board meeting set for Oct. 27 is canceled. The board will hold its next regular meeting on Nov. 10.
