McClain wrestlers split even Saturday

The McClain Tigers wrestling team improved their season record to 9-11 at a tri-match Saturday morning hosted by Little Miami High School, according to McClain mat coach Shane Paul. The Bishop Fenwick Falcons completed the matchup.

McClain and Fenwick are both in the same region, 15A, in the upcoming State Duels, which start next Wednesday, so it is possible these two teams may meet again in the near future.

In round one, MHS and Fenwick wrestled a tough duel that changed leads six times and was tied once. With two matches left, Ethan Taylor (182) sealed the victory for the Tigers with a pin. The final score had McClain on top at 36-33.

“We took this tri-match for the sole purpose of having Keegan Rawlins (138/145) wrestle the 145 pounder from Fenwick, Alex Kowal,” Paul said. “Kowal placed seventh at the State Tournament last year and is a senior this year. This was a tough fight between two warriors, with Kowal winning an 8-1 decision. This fight will pay dividends for Keegan in the future.”

In round two, the Panthers from Little Miami won the match 54-22. This sent the Tigers home with a split for the day.

“We had several tough matches that went the distance,” Paul said. “Little Miami proved to be too big of a team, and they won the majority of the matches. Splitting even on the day was a good day of wrestling for us.”

The Tigers improved their season record to 9-11.

Individually, three Tigers went 2-0 on the day. They were Quinton Smith (113), Phil Waters (152) and Kyler Trefz (170). Dawson Immel (120), Matthew Milnes (126), Keegan Rawlins (138/145), and Ethan Taylor (182) split even. Samantha Immel (160) put up two good fights but was unable to get her hand raised in victory.

Up next for McClain is the previously mentioned State Duels. After beating the fifth-seeded Fenwick today, the Tigers hope to start the playoffs with an upset of the seventh-seeded Goshen High School wrestlers in round one. McClain is seeded 10th.

Clinton-Massie is the host team for the State Duels, and they are seeded second. If McClain can secure the victory in round one, they will wrestle Clinton-Massie in round two. The State Duels start at 5 p.m.
