Three inducted into Hillsboro HOF

Three Hillsboro High School alumni were recently inducted into the Hillsboro High School Hall of Fame.

Drew Balser, a graduate of the class of 2004, was inducted for his accomplishments in golf:

• 4-year All-Conference recognition

• 4-year member of teams that were Conference Champs

• Junior and wenior years, earned All District recognition

• Senior year, member of team that were Sectional and District Champs

• Junior and senior years, state qualifier, individual and team

• Junior year, placed 12th individually at state championship, team placed fifth overall at State Championship

• Senior year, individual State Champion, setting a state record low score of 64 on 18 holes, and a record low score of 30 on 9 holes

• Senior year, member of team that placed second overall at State Championship

Monique Smith, a graduate of the class of 1999, was inducted for her accomplishments in track and field:

• 4-time All Conference champion in shot put and discus

• 4-time member of team that were Conference Champions

• Sophomore year, member of team that were District Champions

• 3-time District Champion

• 3-time Regional Champion

• 4 appearances at the state track and field meet

• Freshman year, State Champion in shot put and sixth place in discus

• Sophomore year, second place in shot put at State Championships

• Junior year, fifth place in discus at State Championships

• Senior year, fifth place in shot put and fifth place in discus at State Championships

• Holds the school record in shot put at 44’11”, and in discus at 142’4”.

T.J. Turner, a graduate of the class of 1997, was posthumously inducted for his accomplishments in basketball and football:

Football:

• 3-time All-Conference

• 4-time member of teams that were Conference Champs

• 2-time Conference Player of the Year

• 4 Playoff appearances

• Member of teams that went 37-3 in regular season play in his four years

• 2-time All-Ohio distinction

Basketball:

• 3-time All-Conference

• 3-time member of teams that were Conference Champs

• 2-time member of teams that were District Champs

• Senior year, member of team that was Regional Semi-finalist

• Senior year, Southeast District Player of the Year

• Senior year, All-Ohio distinction

• Senior year, averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds per game

• Member of the Highland County Athletic Hall of Fame

• Attended Michigan State University and played football for four years, where he earned All Big Ten Honorable Mention his senior year

• Drafted by the New England Patriots in 2001

T.J. passed away in 2014 after a battle with cancer.
