After sputtering through the first couple of offensive series, Wilmington (3-1) was able to get its high-powered offense going with eight touchdowns en route to a 54-7 conquest of the winless McClain Tigers Friday night at Alumni Field.
It was the South Central Ohio League opener for both teams.
McClain averted the shutout by getting on the board with 10:05 to go in regulation on a three-yard run by senior Alex Hollar, and kicker Camden Yates added the PAT to make it a 40-7 ballgame. DJ Ames collected his second TD of the night on a 7-yard run, and sophomore Frantz Cherisca II scored with 4:24 remaining in regulation. Henry’s PAT closed out the scoring making it a 54-7 final.
“I was really proud of the way we bounced back from last week,” WHS head coach Scott Killen after the contest.
“I was especially proud of the way our younger kids performed tonight. They gave us a lot of effort, especially with all the injuries, and they showed a lot of leadership out there. We’ve just got to keep plugging away and deal with these injuries and get healthy as soon as we can,” he remarked.
Dylan Beaugard, inserted as quarterback for the injured Matt Creditt, got the ‘Cane on the board at the 7:42 mark of the opening quarter on a 45-yard touchdown run, however the PAT failed. Marlyn Frisco added a 14-yard TD run at the 3:31 mark of the opening quarter. Although the PAT attempt failed, but the ‘Cane took a 12-0 lead at the first quarter break.
Beaugard added a 40-yard scamper at the 7:40 mark of the second period and Brady Henry’s PAT kick extended Wilmington’s lead to 19-0, as the McClain defense had no way of containing Wilmington’s offensive attack.
Freshman DJ Ames of WHS added a 29-yard touchdown at the 5:42 mark of the second quarter & Henry’s kick made it a 26-0 lead. But the scoring was not over for the orange and black as Beaugard drilled a pass over the middle to Matthew Smith with less than 1:00 remaining in the half. Henry’s third PAT kick made it a 33-0, WHS at halftime.
Senior Austin Jones, with a three-yard run found paydirt for WHS with 7:00 remaining in the third quarter as the advantage reached 40-0 in favor of WHS, the only points scored in the third quarter.
