Lions, Lady Lions looking to improve on 2015

After finishing as Southern Hills League runners up and sixth place for the Fairfield boys and girls track teams, the Lion and Lady Lions are looking to improve in 2016.

As the season gets under way, the Fairfield track team has increased numbers and depth compared to last year. The Lions were the only team to see anyone graduate, so both squads have basically their whole team back and then some.

The track team also adds two new assistant coaches to the mix this year with Jeanette Cunningham and Clinton Pelfrey. Cunningham will be working with the teams on throws and high jump while Pelfrey will work with sprinters and long jumpers.

“We are very strong in the distance past of our program,” said coach Deborah Mangus of her team. “I also think we are very balanced throughout both teams in all other areas.”

“We expect our boys to contend at the top of the league along with Eastern, Ripley, and Lynchburg. We also expect out girls to make a move up from the sixth place they were at last year.”

Blake Adams will return to the girls team as a league champion in the shot put. Also a reigning league champ, Trent Swisher, will be running the 800M again. Michael Mason, Devon Haynes, Klay Walker and Nick Price return as the 4×200 league champs. Those four runners and Garrett Spargur ran in the 4×100 and 4×200 in the regionals last year. Also running at regional last year were Trent Swisher, Wyatt Evans, Noah Richmond, Klay Walker in the 4×800, and Matthew Mangus and Wyatt Evans ran as individuals in the 3200M run and 1600M run respectively.

The Lions and Lady Lions will hit the track this Saturday, March 26 when they travel to Chillicothe for a meet.
