DAR presents membership certificates

The Waw-wil-a-way chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met on March 6. New member Helen Ford was presented with the DAR pin and Rosemary Ryan received her 10-year membership certificate.

Other members this year receiving membership certificates, which were presented earlier or mailed, are: Nina Couser, 10 years; Deborah Johnson, 10 years; Eleanor Tolle, 10 years; Sarah Frydrk, 40 years; and Dorothy Parker, 40 years.

Last March, 50-year members Jean Wallis and Martha Saylor were presented certificates at the chapter’s 125th anniversary.

Many members have had vaccines or COVID-19 and enjoyed socializing again. The members still wore masks and social distanced. Vicki Knauff gave a patriot minute on George Gall, a patriot of several of our members, who came to the local area after the Revolutionary War.

Regent Jane Stowers presented a program on Elizabeth “Betty” Zane, heroine of Fort Henry, the last battle of the American Revolution. Fort Henry was located at present day Wheeling, West Virginia. However, there is no trace now and many street signs with information have disappeared. Betty’s brothers, Ebenezer, Isaac and others, blazed Zane’s trace. Zanesville, Ohio is named for Ebenezer. Zane Grey was a descendant who wrote a book about her. Elizabeth can be found in many history books on the Revolutionary War. It is an amazing story how she ran to a nearby cabin and retrieved desperately needed gun powder to save the people.
