Online bake sale raises money for church

A group of volunteers from St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Hillsboro have been selling baked goods online in an effort called Red Door Bakes to raise money for repairs to the church.

On the first day of each month, the group presents a new selection of baked goods at reddoorbakes.weebly.com. People can order and pay a donation amount of their choice online.

“Then, later in the month, we have a set day and time that people come to the church to pick up the baked goods that they ordered, and each month the items change,” Barbara Zumwalde, a volunteer for the project, said.

A specific project for the church is designated for the funds raised by each month of the bake sale.

“We used to have a boiler system in the church and that got replaced, and we have a large outside tank that is storing anti-freeze and water that was used for the boiling system,” Zumwalde said. “We need to get rid of it, so we are raising money this month to help pay for the disposal of that.”

The bake sales began in June.

“The first two months, the money we raised was going towards replacing a couple windows that we had in the parish building that were basically leaking and needed replaced,” she said.

She said she hopes the amount of money raised for the church will increase as there is more awareness about the bake sales.

“It’s an old church, and we did major renovations, but we still have a lot of other repairs to do, and we found this is a way to try to raise money to do it,” she said.

Zumwalde said a number of items from the sale have been top sellers.

“It seems like a lot of the different breads and rolls seem to be very popular, but it’s always changing,” she said. “This month we have some pies, and we’ve had cookies, but I can tell you from purchasing some of the items myself, they’re all very good.”
