The 2023 Highland County Jr. Fair King Brendan Hagar and Queen Kathryn Ogden submitted letters saying their farewells at those positions. Those letters are below.
“In my last year of 4-H, I had the pleasure of being the Highland County Jr. Fair King,” Hagar said. “It was a lot of work and I was very busy, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. As much as I don’t like waking up early. I do enjoy experiencing all kinds of new things and meeting new people. There were a lot of times I was tired or sore or even a little cranky. But sometimes you have to push through and keep your cool. I did a lot of things my last year of 4-H but one thing I never did was regret. I tried all kinds of things. There was one point where I was chasing sheep to aid in a competition and another where I joined a baking contest at the drop of a hat (I don’t know anything about baking). I may have gotten last place, but I had a lot of fun. If I could give anyone advice, younger or older, it would probably be “Do more doing,” trademark pending. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and always be open to trying new things. I’m always getting outside of my comfort zone and it has made me a better person because of it. I’m leaving for basic training on May 6, which at the time of writing, is closely approaching. I know it will be extremely difficult and I will be outside my comfort zone every day. But I won’t give up and I will push through and the memories and friends I’ve made at the Fair will always have a special place in my heart.”
“As my time as your Fair Queen draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey that has unfolded over the past year,” Ogden said. “Serving as your Fair Queen has been an absolute privilege—one filled with unforgettable experiences, cherished memories and profound gratitude. From the moment I was crowned, I embarked on a journey that would forever change my life. I have had the honor of representing our beloved community at countless events, from livestock shows to parades, the State Fair Queens Contest to festivals, and each moment has been nothing short of magical. Throughout this journey, I have been continually inspired by the unwavering spirit of our community. The dedication, passion, and camaraderie that define the Highland County Fair are truly unparalleled, and I am deeply grateful to have been a part of such a special tradition. To my 4-H and FFA friends, thank you for your friendship and support throughout this journey. Together, we have shared laughter, tears, and countless unforgettable moments, and I am grateful for each and every one of you. To the fair organizers, educators, advisors, volunteers and sponsors, thank you for your tireless dedication and unwavering support. Your hard work and commitment to excellence are the backbone of the Highland County Fair, and I am forever grateful for all that you do. To the fairgoers, thank you for your enthusiasm, support, and love. Your passion for the Highland County Fair is truly inspiring, and it has been an honor to share this journey with you. To the future Fair Queens, I offer my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes. Embrace this incredible opportunity, cherish every moment, and never forget the profound impact you have the power to make. In closing, I extend my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your unwavering support, love, and encouragement throughout my reign. Serving as your Fair Queen has been the greatest honor of my life, and I will forever carry the spirit of the Highland County Fair in my heart.”
