Editor’s note — We’re continuing our tradition of taking a look back each Saturday at some of the important, interesting or even odd events as they were reported during the same week throughout the years, along with interesting advertising features from years gone by.

This week in 1940, The Greenfield Daily Times reported that Jonah Phelps, the vice president of the Ohio State Aerie, Fraternal Order of Eagles, was scheduled to be the guest of honor at the next meeting of the Paint Aerie, with lunch and refreshments to be available.

Cincinnati Mayor James Stewart was in attendance at the Republican really held in Hillsboro, in which around 500 people were also present, with the rally also including a public address system “permitted” to the overflow crowd so they could also hear Stewart’s speech.

Dr. Ross Wilhide was reassigned to First Methodist Church in Greenfield for the fifth year at the annual Ohio Conference of the Methodist Church held at Lakeside, Ohio, while Rev. W.G. Neel, formerly of Leesburg, was transferred to Bowersville in Clinton County.

R.A. Wilson was in attendance at the election of the new Highland County AAA committee to represent Madison Township, following Wilson’s election to the role by Madison Township farmers the prior night at a town hall meeting.

In sports, two players from the backfield, Eldon Newland and Harold Schmidt, would be co-captains for the 1940 McClain Tigers varsity football team for the opening matchup for the team at McClain Field against Clarksburg.

The Rand Theatre, located in Greenfield, advertised multiple showings, including “River’s End,” starring Dennis Morgan, Elizabeth Inglis and George Tobias, and “Information Please,” an American radio quiz show created by Dan Golenpaul.

The Famous Store advertised multiple products, including a dozen jar rubbers for three cents, floor mats for 25 cents, fly ribbons for one cents apiece, washcloths for two cents, boudoir lamps for 97 cents and dinner plates for 10 cents.

This week in 1965, The Greenfield Daily Times reported that enrollment at Greenfield schools for the first day of the term’s second week was at 2,493 students, an increase of 58 people compared to the first day of the school year a week prior.

Greenfield was awarded a symbolic plaque for “outstanding pedestrian safety” during 1964 by the American Automobile Association (AAA), with Greenfield chosen for the award from cities with a population of less than 10,000 people.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency held a “show cause” hearing on the sewage disposal issues in Greenfield, announcing that no “immediate decision” would be made and also didn’t speak on when one would be made on whether the Greenfield permit would be renewed.

The Fairfield Board of Education announced an approval of salary increases for its certified and non-certified employees, with the certified employees receiving a $200 increase while the non-certified ones given an unreported increase.

In sports, the McClain Tigers varsity football team was dominated by London, ruining the home opener for Greenfield, as London junior quarterback Dwight Cox scored two touchdowns in the first quarter alone, leading London to over 300 yards on the night.

The Centerfield Pike Drive-In Theatre, located near Greenfield, advertised multiple films, including “Shenandoah,” starring James Stewart and Doug McClure, and “Woman of Straw,” starring Gina Lollobrigida, Sean Connery and Ralph Richardson

Bob’s Super Valu, located on Fourth and Lafayette Streets in Greenfield, advertised multiple products, including two pounds of bananas for 25 cents, eight boiled ham sandwiches for 99 cents, eight steaks for 69 cents and a gallon of ice cream for 79 cents.

This week in 1990, The Press-Gazette reported that the 1990 Junior Grand Champion Steer owned by Belinda Hottel was sold for $3,701.40 and the Grand Champion Feeder Calf owned by Jana Hess was sold for $2,350.

The fourth annual Hydroplane Regatta by the Rocky Fork Lake Association was planned to be held and feature six classes of the APBA’s inboard class, which ranged from one-litre stock to the 100 mph-plus seven-litre stock.

The Ohio State Board of Education announced its plans to hold a meeting in Hillsboro to ask the local populace about its opinions on education issues, some of those being financing, what the Ohio public school graduate should know and the state board’s recommendations for increasing graduation rates.

State Sen. Cooper Snyder and State Representative Harry Malott announced that they released $251,856 to the Southern State Community College for the development of the Agriculture Enterprise Development Center.

In sports, the Hillsboro varsity football team picked up its first win of the season at Richards Memorial Field by beating the Unioto Shermans by a score of 26-6, as Hillsboro senior quarterback Glen Crawford passed for three touchdowns.

Chakere’s Colony Theatre, located in Hillsboro, advertised “Total Recall,” written by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon and Gary Goldman, directed by Paul Verhoeven and starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone and Michael Ironside.

Bob and Carl’s finer foods, located in Hillsboro, advertised multiple products, including a pound of boneless sirloin tip roast for $2.69, a bag of Ruffles potato chips for $1.99, a dozen glazed donuts for $1.89 and four loaves of white bread for $1.

This week in 2015, The Times-Gazette reported that the Paint Creek board voted by a 5-4 tally to keep Paint Creek Joint/EMS Fire District Chief Bradley George on as chief, but place him on 30-day unpaid suspension and must follow certain guidelines when he returns.

The 2015 Highland County Fair Grand Champion Hog owned by Alex Hollar sold for $30 per pound and the Grand Champion Dair Goat owned by Madison Knox sold for $6 per pound.

Dean Armstrong, race chairman of the Rocky Fork boat races, announced that the event would have to be canceled, saying it was “dead in the water” unless a major sponsor was able to be found for races in the future.

In sports, the Hillsboro varsity football team got its first win of the season on the road against the Clermont Northeastern Rockets by the score of 40-6, with Heith Brown the star of the night, scoring two touchdowns and putting the team on the goal line multiple times.

Town and Country, Inc., located at 838 S. High St. in Hillsboro, advertised multiple products, including a Carhartt long-sleeve t-shirt for $19.99, Cello jeans for as low as $48.99 and Carhartt washed duck work dungarees for $39.99.
