Each year, the state of Ohio releases report cards for schools to help gauge performance and efficacy. It’s not always easy to understand what all goes into the report card determinations, especially since the state changed the report card system a couple years ago.

In an effort to help everyone better understand the report cards, the Greenfield Exempted Village School District on Sept. 23 at 6 p.m. will host an informational session with superintendent Quincey Gray and district director of instruction Alisa Barrett. The session will be held in the McClain cafeteria.

The report card is complex and consists of many components, Gray said previously.

“It is easy to write articles and make posts about star ratings, but what is not easy is understanding how and what type of data feeds into those ratings,” the superintendent said.

“It is also easy for people to make comparisons among districts without understanding that a district’s characteristics impact star ratings,” she said. “As an example, our district is the only one in the county that has multiple K-5 elementary buildings, which impacts how our rating is determined. The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce identifies similar districts so that school districts can make ‘apple to apple’ comparisons. We assess how we are doing compared to those districts in addition to evaluating how our buildings compare to the state average.”

An additional element to the presentation will be chronic absenteeism — what it means and its effect on the district.

Those in attendance will be able to ask questions to help better understand both topics.

“The session is open to anyone in the community and presents a great opportunity to learn about all of the school district components and to ask questions,” Gray said.

Following the session, those attending will have the opportunity to tour the high school. Additionally, those in attendance for the entire session will be eligible for a drawing for a $25 gas gift card.
