Club wraps up fair discussion

Jennifer West, president, opened the September meeting of the Hillsboro Garden Club with the Pledge of Allegiance, welcoming 12 members and four guests.

Secretary Lynn Luman took roll call with the question, “How did you participate in the fair flower shows?”

The September tip of the month: If you are having a problem with ants, apply a line of mentholated rub around a trash can at the ground level, as ants won’t cross that line.

Treasurer Ruth Anna Duff provided the monthly report, followed by West passing out new program booklets for the 2024-2025 year.

Judith Stivender, floral chair for the Wednesday and Friday fair flower shows, made a motion to update fair rule #6 to now read as follows: “Variety name to be listed, if known.” Members voted on the rule change and the motion carried.

The HGC would like to congratulate members Nancy Baldwin, Luman, Larry Moore, Shelly Rayburn and Stivender for their winning floral specimens and artistic designs at the Highland County Fair.

In addition, the HGC would also like to congratulate non-garden club exhibitors Judy Hatfield and Dr. Linda Welder (ret.) for their winning floral specimens and artistic designs during the Wednesday floral show at the fair.

The business meeting was adjourned to host the fall plant sale.

The next meeting of the HGC will be held on Tues., Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. in the floral hall at the Highland County Fairgrounds. Connie Hilliard and West will serve as hostesses for the meeting.

Stivender will lead the program that evening with members and guests decorating ornaments for the Hillsboro Garden Club tree at the Highland House Museum using dried flower material and accessories. The public is welcome to attend.
