Imagine a lively and engaging setting where young participants form lasting bonds with animals, discovering the profound responsibilities and rewards that come with livestock care.

At Aggie’s Camp, youth dive into immersive, hands-on experiences that not only teach them the essentials of animal husbandry but also foster a deep connection with their livestock. Here, they don’t just learn about agriculture — they uncover vital lessons in compassion, teamwork and leadership through the art of raising and showing animals.

Launched in the summer of 2022 by the Mowrystown FFA Chapter, Aggie’s Camp was born out of a desire to deepen agricultural education for youth beyond the chapter’s Ag Day event at Bright Local Elementary. Although Ag Day introduced children to the fundamentals of livestock showing, Mowrystown FFA recognized the need for a more immersive experience. Thus, the three-day Aggie’s Camp was created.

Throughout the camp, campers engage in a variety of activities that promote skill-building and confidence. From learning proper grooming techniques to understanding animal behavior and nutrition, each aspect of livestock care is explored in detail. Participants also dive into creative projects, such as making their own flower pots, where they learn about plant growth and the importance of horticulture. This hands-on approach encourages them to appreciate the beauty of nature while fostering a sense of responsibility for their environment.

Fishing trips add another layer of excitement to the camp experience, allowing participants to connect with the local ecosystem. As they cast their lines and reel in their catches, they learn about aquatic life, conservation and the significance of sustainable practices in agriculture. These activities not only provide a fun break from livestock care, but also reinforce the idea that agriculture encompasses a broader understanding of our natural world.

Under the guidance of dedicated members, campers leave Aggie’s Camp equipped with practical skills and a renewed passion for agriculture. The bonds formed with their animals, fellow campers and the land itself cultivate a strong sense of responsibility and leadership — traits that will serve them well in all areas of life.

At Aggie’s Camp, the journey into agriculture is not just about growing crops; it’s about nurturing young leaders who will carry the values of compassion, teamwork and environmental stewardship into the future.
